Martin Accepts Position as Interim Department Head

Dr. Christopher R. Martin, Professor of Communication Studies, has accepted the position of Interim Head of the Department of Communication Studies for a 2 1/2-year period, beginning Jan. 1, 2011.  Dean Joel Haack announced the appointment on Dec. 23.

Martin (Ph.D, University of Michigan) was first hired at UNI as an assistant professor in 1995, and was promoted to associate professor in 2000. From 2005-2007, he was an associate professor and later assistant director of the journalism program at Miami University (Ohio). Returning to UNI, he was promoted to professor in 2009.

Martin won the Regents Faculty Excellence Award in 2004, and this year was a co-winner of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts Faculty Excellence Award.  He is author of the award-winning book  Framed! Labor and the Corporate Media (Cornell University Press, 2004), and co-author of Media and Culture: An Introduction to Mass Communication (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2011), now in its 7th edition update, and Media Essentials (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2011). Martin chairs the Board of Directors of the Northern Iowan, and is the vice president of the College Hill Partnership
